Wichita Location

Wichita is located in north-central Kansas, about halfway between the state’s two largest cities, Kansas City and Wichita Falls. The city is about 110 miles northeast of Oklahoma City and 190 miles southwest of Omaha.

The city’s name comes from an American Indian word meaning “place of springs.” Wichita was founded in 1872 by Dr. George S. Hallet, who named it after Wichita Creek, which ran through town. The Wichita Air National Guard Base is also located here.
