San Jose is the largest city in Santa Clara County, California, and the tenth largest city in the United States. With a population of 1,409,023 as of the 2010 census, San Jose is the fifth most populous city in California. Located in the heart of Silicon Valley, San Jose is home to several notable technology companies such as Intel, Cisco Systems and SAP. The history of San Jose dates back to 1777 when Spanish missionaries established Mission Santa Clara de Asis. The city became an American municipality on April 29, 1850. In 1851, San Jose became the first county seat of Santa Clara County and continued to be the cultural and economic center of the region.

The arrival of railroads in 1870 and 1871 led to an explosive growth of the city; by 1900, San Jose had surpassed Monterey as the most populous city in Northern California. During World War II, San Jose was a major manufacturing center due to its proximity to military installations like Moffett Field and Lockheed Aircraft. After the war, San Jose experienced a period of economic decline with manufacturing moving out of the city; however, this trend reversed to some extent by the 1990s. Today, San Jose is the eighth largest city in California.

San Jose is located on the north end of the Santa Clara Valley and is bounded by the valley of the San Francisco Bay to the west and north, ranges from Watchung Hills on the east, which separates it from Milpitas, San Jose lies at an elevation of about 39 feet (12 m) above sea level. With a total area of 1,015 square miles (2,650 km²), it has a fairly mild climate for its latitude due to prevailing winds off of San Francisco Bay that make it warmer than areas farther south.
