Fort Worth is a major city in the U.S. state of Texas and the seat of Tarrant County. With a population of 1,214,971 as of the 2010 census, it is the largest city in the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. Fort Worth’s estimated 2014 population was 1,392,874.Fort Worth was founded in 1849 as a military outpost on a bluff overlooking the Trinity River and was named for William H. Seward, who was then Secretary of State.

During the Civil War it served as the main supply center for the Union Army in the Trans-Mississippi West and as a departure point for Confederate troops fleeing east after their defeats at Gettysburg and Vicksburg. Fort Worth became an industrial center during the 20th century due to its proximity to Dallas and its rail lines.

The city has expanded since 2000 with construction of skyscrapers in downtown and suburban areas including Victory Park, Downtown Fort Worth, Belt Line East, and The District. Fort Worth is home to six Fortune 500 companies: American Express, Boeing, Caterpillar, Chevron, ConocoPhillips and GEICO.
